For Children

As we’ve seen, children often respond better to hypnotic suggestion than adults. In some cases, children can see improvement in their symptoms after just a single session. In one study published in the Journal of Laparoendoscopic and Advanced Surgical Techniques in 2009, in adolescents ages eleven to eighteen with recurrent abdominal pain, fourteen of seventeen saw all their clinical symptoms resolve after a single session of hypnosis. This is particularly remarkable because the patients’ symptoms had been severe; all had been admitted for the third time to a hospital pediatric surgery department.19

In a 2007 study published in Gastroenterology, six sessions of fifty-minute hypnosis training led to an 85 percent success rate in the treatment of IBS pain, nausea, vomiting, and loss of appetite in children ages eight to eighteen—results that were more than three times better than in the control group, which did not use hypnosis but instead received education, dietary advice, pain medication, supportive therapy about dietary and emotional triggers, and proton-pump inhibitors when necessary. At the one-year follow-up, 85 percent of the hypnosis group had achieved clinical remission of symptoms. The children in the study had been suffering from IBS for at least a year prior to receiving hypnosis. The researchers stated, “This high success rate is remarkable, given that most children were referred by other hospitals after receiving no benefit from extensive other therapies, such as treatment with proton-pump inhibitors, laxatives, and psychotherapy.” They go on to say that “our results corroborate earlier data in 3 uncontrolled trials in children. Self-hypnosis or a combination of guided imagery and relaxation, a technique almost identical to hypnosis, was successfully used in 90 percent of the children in these trials.”20

Children with IBS who have undergone hypnosis treatment have verified the positive results in their own words. In diaries they kept during clinical trials, excerpts from which were later published in Clinical Pediatrics, the children described hypnosis and self-hypnosis as “learning to feel the difference between tense and relaxed muscles and using your imagination to tell your body what to do.”21

Studies show that children who use hypnosis and self-hypnosis experience fewer days of pain, miss fewer activities, and have better attendance at school.22 In some cases, children treated with hypnosis may even go into complete remission, resuming a normal life.23
